The lesson/project was a video portfolio for the unit Knife Skills in Foods 2. I felt that this was a great opportunity to allow students to use the best practices for creative thinking such as using stimulating materials, experiences, and optimally challenging tasks as well as taking risks.
I chose this particular assignment to use as an artifact because I used this during the school year and saw how much the students loved to work on it. I was able to see student growth in ways I couldn't before. In the past I would grade the students as they made knife cuts in front of me, but now with the videos, I am able to play them over and over again. I also noticed that students took more pride in their knife cuts knowing that they had to video tape their skills. Some challenges I can see in using this in the classroom was the lack of technology. Since our school does not have 1:1 computer access, I was very dependent upon students having cellular data or hoping I would get the laptop cart that day. In the future I need to plan ahead to accomidate our technology lacking.

The assessment tool that I originally used is a google form. It is a simple fill in the blank assessment that will give students immediate feedback. I like using Google Forms because it not only gives students immediate feedback, but also helps me to compare data from class to class. I can even see what questions were answered incorrectly more than 50% of the time.
The new tool that I used was through Quizlet. Using this tool was very similar to using google forms and was very easy to set up and use. What I like about using Quizlet is that after you make the quiz, it gives you several study methods, games and quizzes to choose from. This artifact was chosen because it was helpful comparing two assessment tools I actually use in my classroom. I was able to see the positives and negatives for both tools, and make appropriate choices when I am going to assess my students. I had a few challenges when creating these two tools since I was only familiar with Google Forms and not Quizlet. I could see how Quizlet could be hard to maneuver, but the videos and tutorials available online were very helpful. My students also shared with me a few Quizlets they used in their other classes for comparison. As this course comes to an end I began to really struggle with how I would reflect honestly on this course. This was my forth course in the technology courses from USF. I was already very familiar with the set up of the online learning, discussions and assignments. I thought I was prepared for what this class was to offer, but I was wrong. I do not feel that this class offered me any more learning than any of the other classes I took previously. I felt as if most of the assignments did not relate to the topic of technology. I felt as if I would spend hours working on the assignments, only to be given the same value as a discussion that would take less than 45 minutes.
I will say that the discussion we had for week 3, Productivity Tools Review was the most informative lesson. I learned so many new tools that I never even heard of that I am eager to use in my classroom in the fall. Everyone gave different ideas which was nice to read. I wished that this class focused way more on the history and background of technology in the classroom and not Getting to Know Google or differentiating in learning. I am eager to continue taking the other technology classes to finish up my 15 hours, but I may need to take a break because I felt this took so much of my time. |
